Request conciliation and arbitration assistance

Trade unions and employers can apply online to the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development for neutral conciliation and arbitration assistance.


Request for Appointment of Conciliation Officer
A union or employer can apply to the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development for assistance in reaching a collective agreement. Conciliation is the process that the parties must complete to be in a legal strike or lockout position, as outlined in the Labour Relations Act, 1995.

Request for Appointment of Arbitrator/Chair/Nominee Under Section 48
A party to a collective agreement that is governed by the Labour Relations Act, 1995 can request the appointment of a single arbitrator, chair or nominee in the case of a failure to appoint, as outlined in section 48 of that Act.

Request for Appointment of Single Arbitrator Under Section 49 (Expedited Arbitration)
A party to a collective agreement that is governed by the Labour Relations Act, 1995 can request the appointment of a single arbitrator through an expedited process, as outlined in section 49 of that Act.

Request for Appointment of Single Arbitrator Under Section 53
A party to a collective agreement that is governed by the Fire Protection and Prevention Act, 1997 can request the appointment of a single arbitrator, as outlined in section 53 of that Act.

Request for Appointment of Single Arbitrator Under Section 53.0.1 (Expedited Arbitration)
A party to a collective agreement that is governed by the Fire Protection and Prevention Act, 1997 can request the appointment of a single arbitrator through an expedited process, as outlined in section 53.0.1 of that Act.

Application for Approval as an Arbitrator
Individuals can apply to have their name added to the Minister of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development's list of approved grievance arbitrators.
